Actreen® intermittent catheters
As responsible consumers we all know the importance of sustainabiility and the environment, and by being mindful of the greener choices on offer we can act and make changes for tomorrow.
Plastic waste pollutes the oceans and around 80% of marine waste comes from activity on land. Every 2 seconds, 1 tonne of waste plastic ends up in the sea(2) and it is predicted that by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish.(2)
Today, plastics kill 1.5 million animals per year and if nothing changes, by 2050, about 99% of marine animals will have eaten plastics in the sea.
All catheters look alike, but slight variations in packaging can impact the amount of plastic waste produced by each brand; weight, packaging material, quantity of plastic parts and their recyclability.
Using intermittent catheters is an essential part of every day life and they help to simplify the catheterisation procedure and restore independence for the catheter user. However, some catheters have a lower carbon footprint than others and produce less waste.
Simplicity and comfort are important considerations for choosing the right catheter. With Actreen® we have designed a catheter range that is comfortable, discreet and easy to use but that can reduce the ecological footprint of daily catheterisations.
Actreen® is made of TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) which is a chemically resistant polymer and does not contain plasticisers. It has therefore fewer leachables and extractables than soft PVC and is latex and PVC free.
Because TPO has a lower density than PVC, less material is needed to produce a catheter. This leads to a reduction in overall material consumption and plastic waste.
Less material and fewer components are the key to easier recycling. In comparison to the main competitor products, Actreen® consists of fewer parts and the primary packaging does not contain aluminum or hard plastic, both of which are more complicated to recycle. After use, dispose of your used catheter according to local regulations. Plastic films can be recycled widely at supermarkets and recycling centres. Wash the Actreen film before recycling
TPO consists solely of carbon and hydrogen. It neither contains chloride nor any other "halogen". When incinerated, the TPO plastic material that Actreen® is made of does not release toxic compounds into the air. The process is air pollution free.
One of the measurable distinctions between Actreen® and other intermittent catheters is your reduced bathroom waste. Due to its eco-design, the product’s volume is noticeably reduced. Find out how big this difference in grams (g) of plastic really is.
Waste calculator for intermittent catheters
Do you want to know how much waste you potentially produce with your current brand of catheter compared to Actreen®? The waste calculator will help you to find out the waste management benefits of using Actreen for now, and in the longer term.

Wherever you go you want to have your supply of catheters all in one place. That's why in every pack of Actreen you will find a carry pouch to hold a daily supply of Actreen; keeping your catheters discreet and tidy for those days away from home.
B. Braun has taken an important step towards making Actreen® greener. Our pouches are now paper based with a special PVC-coating for durability. You can use them multiple times, even in a wet environment. They come in useful for carrying used catheters while you locate a bin.
The first product generation was developed in 2004 and has continually improved its ecological footprints.
