"Appetite for life"
Imagine you need to live without main parts of your intestines due to Crohn's disease. Immediately, numerous questions arise. What would it mean for your life? Will your relationship to food change? How much are daily routines and activities like work, family and friends affected? Marek Lichota, a Polish patient living with short bowel syndrome, tells his story about home parenteral nutrition and explains how he re-discovered an "appetite for life" and made these three words his new life motto.
Associate Professor Dr. Stanislaw Klek has been in charge of the Kracow HPN center for the last fifteen years. There are 101 HPN patients under his surveillance at the moment – one of them is Marek. When they met in 2005, Marek was in bad shape. Today, he is a source of inspiration for the Chairman of the Polish Society for Parenteral, Enteral Nutrition and Metabolism.
